DYNAFLOW – RENOVATION KITS
Overview
This category includes rebuild kits for Dynaflow automatic transmissions used in Buicks between 1948 and 1963. Dynaflow is Buick's early fully automatic transmission and comes in several versions during the period, including early Dynaflow and Twin Turbine Dynaflow (not Flight Pitch).
Refurbishment kits are used for servicing, repairing and completely refurbishing Dynaflow boxes and contain the wear parts that normally need to be replaced during disassembly.

Technical information
Dynaflow is an early automatic transmission that primarily works with torque converters and clutches rather than traditional gear steps. The design places high demands on the correct choice of materials, the correct thickness and correct tolerances on gaskets, seals and plates.

Oil and specifications (ATF)
Dynaflow automatic transmissions are designed for GM Automatic Transmission Fluid Type A / Type A Suffix A , as specified in original Buick service manuals.
Gulf ATF Type A is an example of a modern, available oil that meets these older specifications and is well suited for use in Dynaflow boxes.
As an alternative, Dexron II (mineral-based) ATF is also used in practice, which has been shown to work well in these older designs when Type A is not available.
Important:
It is recommended to be careful with modern fully synthetic or low-friction ATFs, such as Dexron VI, as these may have friction properties and viscosity that are not suited to the Dynaflow gearbox design and plate material.
Torque Ball – important information when renovating
Dynaflow boxes are equipped with a so-called Torque Ball in the rear part of the transmission. When refurbishing, it is important that this component is fitted and adjusted correctly.
Torque Ball – shimming
The Torque Ball must be shimmed correctly during assembly. Improper shimming, especially if done too hard or too tight, can cause problems over time.
Warning – shimming too hard
If the Torque Ball is shimmed too hard, it can cause the vulcanized rubber in the bowl to be loaded incorrectly. Over time, this can cause the rubber to come loose from the backing, crack or deform, which can cause oil leakage into the rear of the transmission.
Shims – included and can be supplemented
When renovating, selected shims are included in the renovation kits. Additional shims are also available for purchase individually if needed under the Gaskets and Seals category.
